Paper is a thin sheet material made of cellulose derived from wood, rags, grasses or other vegetable sources. It is one of the most important inventions in history, used daily for various purposes worldwide. With the advent of the printing press and mechanical harvesting of wood, and the improvement of technology, disposable paper became more affordable for the average consumer. The expansion of the paper production industry has negatively impacted our environment, therefore, sustainable forests are introduced to reduce the negative impacts on the environment.
What is Sustainable Managed Forestry?
A sustainable forest is a forest that is carefully managed so that as trees are felled, they are replaced with seedlings that eventually grow into mature trees. The purpose of the sustainable forest is to produce wood products such as wood pulp for the paper industry and wood-based materials for furniture manufacture and construction industry while conserving the natural environment and ensuring the safety of flora and fauna.
Why We Should Use Paper From Sustainable Managed Forestry?
Why paper from the sustainable forest? Using paper produced from sustainable forests can reduce the illegal logging activities which may cause wildlife extinction and may disturb the ecosystem of the forests. Sustainable forests management should be applied, so that forests continue to exists providing natural materials to us all.
How Does Sustainable Forestry Work?
Sustainable forest management is the management of forests according to the principles of sustainable development, which has to keep the balance between three main pillars: ecological, economic and socio-cultural. Success in achieving sustainable forest management will provide integrated benefits to all, ranging from safeguarding local livelihoods to protecting the biodiversity and ecosystems provided by forests, reducing rural poverty and mitigating some of the effects of climate change.
What is FSC, PEFC & ISEGA?
Have you ever pay attention to the certification logo on the paper products you used? There are several respected certification schemes which help to ensure the paper you use originated from a sustainable forest source. The two most recognisable certifications are Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) and Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification (PEFC). Packaton is proud to mention that we have earned both FSC and PEFC certification for our company’s paper products which provides an assurance to the purchasers that our paper products are made of wood that is originated from sustainable forests.
What are FSC and PEFC? FSC is an international non-profit, multi-stakeholder organisation which promote responsible management of the world’s forests. The FSC logo on paper and printed products indicates that the products are made of wood that comes from FSC certified forests or post-consumer waste. Next, PEFC is an independent, non-profit, non-governmental organisation which promotes sustainably managed forests through independent third-party certification. The PEFC logo provides an assurance to users of paper products that the wood fibre comes from PEFC certified, sustainably managed forests.
Apart from FSC and PEFC certification, Packaton also obtained ISEGA certification. ISEGA is an independent testing and certification institute which works on analysing pulp, paper, board, packaging, and food contact materials in the fields of chemical and physical analytical work, microbiology, ecology, examination, and certification of products. ISEGA certification logo on the paper products assures purchasers of paper products that Packaton paper products are suitable to use as direct food contact materials. It also indicates that our paper products are environmentally friendly.
